The female leader’s unsheathed claw glinted in the late afternoon’s setting sunlight. How she loved to flex them after an afternoon’s successful hunt. Quietly, she went into her den to pick the burrs from her pelt and give herself a bath. Subsequent to her bath she stretched her muscles and padded back outside. Pool Rock looked tall and noble in the light, and the pool around it was shimmering. It made Oakstar fill with pride of her clan’s beautiful home. Bunching her back muscles, she sprung upon the grey stone, and let out an earsplitting yowl, “May all cats old enough to catch their own prey join me under Pool Rock for a Riverclan Meeting!!! It is time for one in our midst to receive their new apprentice!” A slight smile broke out on her face, but dropped when she thought of who should be the mentor. Hawkice. It was he whom needed Hazelpaw as an apprentice, no matter how much she regretted it. Oakstar was still having bitter thoughts about their last reunion, and they didn’t leave quite a good taste in her mouth. Two eyelids narrowed and a small grumble came from her throat. He should be the mentor, but Oakstar didn’t want to give him the pleasure and pride of being assigned an apprentice, a follower. Could he turn Hazelpaw into one of him? Was he really out to be as horrible as she had imagined?

Hawkice padded from the Warriors den. He heard his love call to the clan, and he wanted to tell her that he loved her and that he was sorry. He wanted her to know that he would fight a fox for her and die for her. He padded up to the the Pool Rock with a twinkle in his eye. He knew Oakstar held small grudges, but a grudge nonetheless. He looked up to Oakstar and he knew noone was here just yet. I'm sorry Oakstar. I love you, I always have, I just needed to think. He mewed in almost a whisper, but he was sure that Oakstar could hear.
He had wanted to say so much to her, but he couldnt because of all the cats that were coming to the meeting. He hoped his short words were enough for this moment in time to keep Oakstar from clawing his face off. He looked at her, his eyes in awe, and he hoped she saw it in his crystal blue eyes. He only let his emotions show through if he realy meant them. He never lied to anyone, unless they deserved it, and Oakstar didnt deserve being lied to. She deserved a great Tom, and he was only happy to be a tom that loved her.

Hazelpaw's ears prick when she hears RiverClan's leader call her Clan to order. My Clan. The drowsy she- cat starts to get up slowly, then realizes what this meeting could mean. She could finally be getting a mentor. She had been waiting for almost half a moon. She leaps to her nimble paws and gives herself a quick groom, smoothing down her ruffled, mottled-saimese color coat. She trots through the entrance of the apprentices' den up to Pool Rock to where Oakstar and Hawkice are talking quietly with a couple other cats from the Clan gathered in groups to talk among themselves. She settles down onto a grassy patch of ground, gathering her longish legs under herself. She gazes up at her leader with intent and expressive, silvery-gray eyes. After waiting for only a minute, she gets impatient to find out what this meeting is about. She gets to her small paws and starts to pace, looking for something to distract her for the time being, at least until Oakstar started speaking. She walks over to the stump next to the apprentices' den and sharpens her claws briefly. After they have been sharpened to a satisfactory point, she walks slowly back to the space in front of Pool Rock and lays down again, closing her eyes to contentedly dream of how being an actual apprentice would feel. To be trained to fight, to be evaluated on her skills, and even go on patrols. She pulls herself up into a sitting position and curls her tail around her paws.

Oakstar's blue eyes pierced Hawkfrost as he approached, and narrowed when he came closer. His eyes were like marbles and she fell in love with them every time she looked at them. Turning her head away breifly, she bit her tongue and turned back to face him. She crouched down closer to him and whispered in a harsh tone, "Why? Why could you leave me all alone there to face the patrol like I had done so wrong? But let me finish this ceremony, my duty to the clan must come before we are to sort everything out. Meet me in the warrior's den after the ceremony..." With those last words she got up into her prideful position and resumed looking out over the clan. Only Hazelpaw and Hawkfrost had arrived, but that was enough, they could still carry on like normal, right? Her voice rang out like a bell that had just been struck even though she was only announcing herself to two cats. “Hazelpaw, please step forward. You have accepted the honorary position of an apprentice of Riverclan, and your mentor shall be named.” She swiveled around to turn to Hawkfrost, and in a steady voice she called, “Hawkfrost, you shall be Hazelpaw’s new mentor. You must not let anything stand in the way of your training her.” Her voice wavered slightly, and she dreamed off, thinking about the love that she and Hawkfrost shared. Her eyes were cloudy and she dozed off the subject for quite a while. Hazelpaw’s image faded from her view, and then she snapped back to reality. This is not your time to dream Oakstar! It is an important part of Hazelpaw’s life and your just taking a little catnap as if it were a hot summer day and you had just come back from dawn patrol! She turned to both of them and asked, "Are you both ready to accept the responsibilities of your apprentice and mentor?"

Ice blue eyes watched Oakstar as her facial expression changed several times. From sadness, to anger and rage, then to commitment. Hawkice's eyes flashed love, then went blank. Oakstar went on with the ceremony, and named him mentor. Hawkice's ears twitched towards his new apprentice. He listened to Oakstar's words and then dipped his head. I will teach him all I have learned. He stated in his promise. He wanted to be the best of the best as a mentor, and he wanted Oakstar to see that he still cared for her clan. He looked at Hazelpaw and blinked his ice cold blue eyes. He waited for her to speak her words carefully, before he touched noses with her and to tell her that her first session would be the Sun-down boarder patrol that he was supposed to lead. He looked up at Oakstar, but for a glance, flashing an 'okay' signal, that he would do as she asked, and then he looked back at Hazelpaw. Come on.. Hurry it up. He thought, he wanted to get out of here so he could in fact talk to Oakstar. He wanted to make things right with her, and make sure everything was okay before she went to the Moon pool.

Hazelpaw grimaces inwardly, but keeps her face straight and impassive as Oakstar names her mentor. Hawkice had never been one of her favorite cats in the Clan. He had always seemed cold and uncaring, but right now his face was full of some kind of emotion... love? That was weird. That wasn't a general emotion for any ceremony. Obviously it's from when he was talking to Oakstar before the ceremony. She feels a flash of curiousity but pushes it away as she listens to Hawkice's oath. She quickly thinks of what she should say and while she is doing so, she glances up at her new mentor. Impatience crosses his face while she looks at him and again she cringes on the inside. This was definately not her idea of a wonderful mentor-apprentice relationship, but oh well. At least now she could start her training finally. She looks up her leader and says solemnely I will learn everything that he teaches to the best of my abilities. She walks forward to touch his nose for the shortest moment possible and then almost leaps backwards in her haste to make it quick.

Oakstar felt proud that she had just completed another ceremony, until she saw Hazelpaw's face when Hawkice was announced her mentor. A sigh escaped the female's lips, and the wearyness of the day was etched across her face. Had she made yet another bad decision for her clan? Of course, not everyone saw Hawkice the way she did... Not everyone... Only she knew his insides and soft heart that was fragile, while the rest of him was bulk and brawn. Oakstar stared at the glittering water that surrounded her for a minute, but no matter how hard she tried, she could not just dissappear into her world of fantasy, no longer could she romp in the woods without caring. She had duties now. When Hazelpaw barely touched Hawkice's nose, then drew away, she knew that it wasn't the right choice. No matter how many apprentices Hawkice had to choose from, no one would be perfect for his needs. He was unique and special, and his expectations were larger than life, but he could still mentor well. Hazelpaw had to give him a chance. Without another word, Oakstar leaped off of the Pool Rock and padded towards the two, mentor and apprentice.
