Bramblestep
Bramblestep's excitement, having bubbled up again at the prospect of the apprentice part of the ceremony, was forced to simmer once more as Fernstar called Cedarclaw forward. The tabby tom's head swiveled around, as green gaze falling on the medicine cat as she hesitantly padded forward. He couldn't help but feel a pang of sympathy as he watched the she-cat. Her apprentice, Mudpaw, had died only recently, and now she was being forced to replace her? The time between the two events was harshly short. But then, Fernstar had to do what was best for the clan; it was risky not to have a medicine cat apprentice in training, in case Cedarclaw...
Bramblestep found himself unable to finish the thought, swallowing his dread. Losing a medicine cat apprentice was a cruel blow, but to lose a medicine cat? That was even worse. Shaking the thought away, the warrior struggled to force his attention back to the ceremony. The new medicine cat apprentice. Right. Bramblestep's gaze flitted from one cat to the next, considering each for the position; there were Redkit and Bluekit, the youngest of the bunch. Then there was Hawkpaw, slightly shy but determined. Thistlepaw, innocent and open-minded. And finally, Icepaw, definitely the most prickly of the bunch. Try as he might, Bramblestep couldn't manage to picture any one of the apprentices emerging from Cedarclaw's den with a package of herbs, ready to treat a wound. But then again, he didn't know any of them particularly well; he could be mistaken.
"I will be taking Icepaw to the Moonpool when the chance is given, so that he shall receive the status of the next ThunderClan medicine cat apprentice. Icepaw, do you accept what I say, are you willing to become the next medicine cat of ThunderClan?" Cedarclaw finally spoke up, after a moment of silent deliberation. Bramblestep thought he detected a trace of anxiety in her tone, and with good reason; Icepaw was a slightly...touchy cat, put lightly, and certainly not empathetic enough to formulate a gentle rejection. Green eyes narrowed in anticipation as Bramblestep looked to the young tom, trying to fathom what his response would be.

A strong she-cat's voice rang out across the camp and the familiar words of a clan meeting echoed within the hollow like rain falling upon the leaves. As if on auto pilot the black chinchilla tom lifted himself from his mossy bedding and stretched his limbs. He had been muling over the days events silently when the call came.
Stretching provided him with a source of renowned energy and alertness. Any hint of exhaustion had been washed away. Before stepping out into the clearing the thick boned tom gave himself a good, vigorous shake, sending scrapes of mossy bedding and bracken flying. Perhaps I should have been more careful. Well it shouldn't have made much of a mess with my pelt being so long and thick. Icepaw could feel his fur sticking in various directions now. Great. Hastily he licked a fore paw and tried to smooth his fur down.
Satisfied that he was at least presentable and not attention drawing he ventured out into the clearing. The white and pale silver pointed tom was one of the last to arrive. He quietly sat down at the back of the assembled cats and listened to Fernstar's words. She was going to announce the new deputy, mentors, and apprentices. He could careless and with that he listened to his leader with one ear.
The cobby tom was startled by Cedarclaw's voice. What had happened what had he missed? The new deputy was Maplefeather, he knew that much because she was now at the front of the gathered clan with Fernstar and Cedarclaw. She must be choosing her apprentice. The choice was obvious, why not Thistlepaw, she seemed interested in that sort of work.
Icepaw's jaw flew open and he felt his claws slide out of their protective sheaths. His hair began to rise slightly as he felt the stares of many cats turn to him. What?! She wanted him as her apprentice?! Why not Thistlepaw, they got along better. 'You would too if you weren't such a grouch.' His alarm quickly faded from his body like a taunt rope cleanly cut. A deep anger instead settled upon him and his body felt like a hurricane forming in the warm tropics.
Of course how could he have been so stupid, so blind? He was going to become the next medicine cat because he was a flop as a warrior. His timing was off and his aim was poor. There were too many scents and sounds, they rushed at him and filled his ears with their clatter. He hadn't yet been able to block the sea of his surroundings gather by his senses and focus on his target. He would be easy pickings in a fight and he wasn't a reliable hunter. They were giving him the easy job, so easy a kitty-pet could do it. They couldn't just send him to the elders den to rot and Fernstar had said that they were in low numbers so throwing him out was a no. He had been getting sick a lot too, though most of them just lies, so maybe they were all banking on the fact that he could learn to care of himself with out robbing Cedarclaw of her time. He was prickly and few liked to associate with him and medicine cats often lived solitary lives.
Then again he wouldn't need a warrior with him and could leave the camp as he pleased, no questions asked. He would be left alone more often. He could speak with StarClan and demand that they restore his vision. He wouldn't be worked from dawn to dusk. No more patrols and complaining apprentices. No more Warrior Code and cleaning out the old bedding. No more punishments for lying. No cat would question him, he would hold more power even then Fernstar. Well maybe almost.
A cold darkness and bitterness left him with an eerie calm. He would show this clan what he could do. He would show them that he was more than a flop of a warrior. A raging fire burned within him, he would accept Cedarclaw's offer and train as an apprentice. Yes being enclosed in the cave with painfully strong smelling herbs made his mouth fill with bile but he would live with it.
Icepaw closed his mouth and dipped his head. "I accept your offer, it is an h.....it'll be interesting to serve my clan in this way." Well he couldn't say 'it is an honor'. It didn't feel much like honor, more like a torturous death sentence.
((Wow that was really long. Don't mean to brag (since my posts aren't incredible), but Icepaw's next posts should make for a very nice read. ^^))

fernstarThe breeze had blown into the cavernous camp had quickly climbed the walls, leaving a barrier behind. In short, the latter was no more. Whenever a cat spoke, their words fell short, heralding no echo whatsoever. When Fernstar called her friend forward, a certain anxiety grew over the crowd. Pairs of eyes gazed at the long-haired she-cat as she began to speak. A long pause followed Cedarclaw's voice. Icepaw was to become the Medicine cat apprentice, if accepted by StarClan. To the leader's surprise, though, the fiery tom accepted respectfully.
"So it is final. Cedarclaw and Icepaw will travel to the Moonpool after the sun sets tomorrow."
One more significant matter had been dealt with but still another stands. Over the ceremony her choices for mentors have become legitimate. She would begin promptly; the dawn patrol would have to be arranged before the sun gets to high in the sky.
"Now as four young cats sit in front of me I would like to call upon Bramblestep." Taking in a deep breath she practiced the words that her ancestors had spoken many times in history in her mind, "Bramblestep, you will mentor Bluekit. Your loyalty and care have made you a respected in ThunderClan, may you pass on your knowledge to Bluepaw."
Her eyes found the tabby tom and watched as the two cats approached each other before she continued. "Ravencaw, you will mentor Hawkpaw. Although you are young, your mind and honesty has proven to make you quite an interesting cat. I hope you pass on everything you have learned to Hawkpaw." The same pause was repeated for the couple of toms as was given for the previous pair.
"Maplefeather, as the deputy of ThunderClan you are not exempt from the chance of getting an apprentice. You will be mentoring Redkit. Your wit and commitment has been valued, I hope you will pass on everything that you have learned and experienced to Redpaw."
To finish the apprentice ceremony she gazed at the golden brown she-cat whom she would be calling upon shortly. "Goldenheart, you will be mentoring Thistlepaw. Your concentration and good nature has always brought smiles to our faces. May you pass on your knowledge to Thistlepaw."
Beaming, Fernstar sat happily on the high ledge before she moved to the floor of the camp, not long after she began the chant, "Bluepaw! Redpaw! Thistlepaw! Hawkpaw!" Skidded down the hall of stones her tail was judged for balance. The earlier stated patrol would be leaving soon. Perhaps she would go, although she did not want to take the spotlight off of Maplefeather so quickly. Something inside her had been renewed, and she remembered why she loved what she was and how much each of the cats in her clan meant to her.

Bramblestep
Slowly, as Bramblestep watched, the young tom-cat seemed to register what had been said. Icepaw's jaw dropped, his expression one of utter surprise. For a moment, Bramblestep felt a twinge of hope; maybe that was all the young cat was feeling, maybe he was really was just shocked to be given the opportunity, rather than hostile. That faint hope, however, was quickly extinguished as a darker expression took over Icepaw's initial surprise. Bramblestep couldn't help but wince, for Cedarclaw's sake, as the young cat's fur began to bristle, his claws sinking into the soft, muddy earth.
Icepaw was silent for a few moments, as though deliberating. But there was no mistaking the angry gleam in his blue eyes. The young cat was going to refuse Cedarclaw's offer, that much was clear. But would he do it in front of the entire clan? Would he dare embarrass the medicine cat so? As he watched the young tom, thinking of his grumpy, prickly personality, Bramblestep felt his belly turn over; yes, yes he would. Sympathy touched his green gaze as it flicked to the lean form of Cedarclaw, looking more than slightly uncertain herself. An apprentice refusing a mentor was something he'd never seen, but the tabby tom could all too easily imagine the sting of being rejected by a younger cat. As he watched the Cedarclaw, another worry crept into the warrior's mind; who would be the medicine cat apprentice, if Icepaw wouldn't? Once again, Bramblestep considered the candidates. Maybe Thistlepaw, she seemed like-
"I accept your offer, it is an h...it'll be interesting to serve my clan in this way."
It took a moment for Bramblestep to fully register Icepaw's response. When he finally did, it took a great deal of will-power to keep his jaw from falling open. He was accepting Cedarclaw's offer? For a moment, the tabby warrior could only feel relief, mixed with surprise. But that relief was soon washed away by a wary suspicion, and he turned his head to look at Icepaw. The young cat's expression had changed drastically from what it had been, not moments ago; instead of enraged, an unsettling calm had wreathed his features. Bramblestep hadn't missed the way Icepaw had hesitated slightly in his response; did he really want to be a medicine cat? Judging by his earlier anger, no. But maybe after mulling it over, he had had a change of heart. Even so, Bramblestep couldn't help but give his chest fur a couple of wary licks as he turned his attention back to Fernstar.
It was time for the rest of the apprentices to receive their mentors. The tabby warrior's unease was quickly washed away by renewed interest, mixed with a excitement. He didn't expect to be chosen as a mentor; there were many older, more experienced cats in Thunderclan, all much more suitable for the job than he. But at the same time, he couldn't help but feel a twinge of excitement as Fernstar began to speak. In need of some sort of outlet for his growing hopefulness, he began to lick one large paw, the rasping of his tongue quick and agitated.
"Now as four young cats sit before me, I would like to call upon..."
Bramblestep set his paw down, one ear twitching with anticipation.
"Bramblestep."
Now the tabby warrior's jaw really did fall. For a moment, he was sure he'd simply imagined the leader's clear voice announcing his name, a result of wishful thinking. But when he looked up, he found Fernstar's unwavering gaze resting on him. So he hadn't imagined it. He was a mentor...but of who?
"Bramblestep, you will mentor Bluekit. Your loyalty and care have made you respected in Thunderclan, may you pass on your knowledge to Bluepaw," Fernstar continued, her words steady and reassuring. The clan seemed to sit a little straighter, the gleam in their gazes renewed as they watched; it seemed that they found comfort in the familiar ceremony. Bramblestep, however, was far to keyed up to feel anything close to comfort.
"Bluepaw," he murmured under his breath, testing the foreign name on his tongue. Bluepaw, Bluepaw. His gaze, a mixture of shock, disbelief, excitement and doubt, travelled over the crowd until it managed to find the young she-cat. She sat next to her brother, Redkit, her gaze positively glowing; if Bramblestep was excited, Bluepaw was ecstatic. The blue-gray cat kept wriggling, shifting her position, her attention flicking anywhere and everywhere. She was a stark contrast to her red-furred brother, who sat with a quite dignity that seemed far too solemn for such a young cat.
Suddenly, Bramblestep felt genuinely doubtful. In his mind, a mentor was supposed to have all the answers. He was supposed to be patient and wise, kind but firm. That was what his mentor had been to him. But he was...well, he was just Bramblestep; young, cautious, uncertain, and completely inexperienced Bramblestep. He couldn't help but feel like he would be letting Bluepaw down by being her mentor; she deserved someone a real mentor, not a cat who still had trouble asking the current apprentices to do something for him, or accepting the responsibility of leading a patrol. Compared to Ravencaw, Maplefeather and Goldenheart, the other selected cats, he almost felt like an apprentice himself.
"I'll...try my best, Fernstar," he managed to mew, his attempt at a confident and sure tone sounding lame even to him. Uncertainly, he padded forward to where Bluepaw sat. Bramblestep met her green gaze, and flinched inwardly at the expectant look he found there. He touched noses with the she-cat, looking at the ground as he did so. He couldn't bare to see Bluepaw's reaction when she found that her mentor was not gentle and warm-hearted Goldenheart, or spunky, fearless Maplefeather, or the quirky and friendly Ravencaw, but bumbling, worrisome, cautious Bramblestep.
[Sorry about the length! I...ah, kind of got carried away.]

-- fluffyDREAMY mapleFEATHERY how i remember sleepless nights when we would read by candlelight remembering a blue moonlight upon the fallen snow
` enter: maplefeather
-- For a moment, Maplefeather was concerned that her Clan was not approving of Fernstar's selection as a deputy - after all, she had not yet had an apprentice. It seemed odd to the sharp-tongued she-cat to not be utterly confident among her Clanmates, and yet here she was. However, her fears dissipated as a nameless cat began to yowl her name, reminding the rest of the Clan what the appropriate ritual was. Maplefeather dipped her head in an attempt for noble acceptance. "Maplefeather! Maplefeather!"
-- As Fernear continued on with the sacred ceremonies, Maplefeather wondered if she would be one of the cats selected to mentor. Five mentorless apprentices - it was a great opportunity. It was almost certain that one of the more experienced warriors would be selected as well, should she lose enough dignity to actually ask for advice. But first things were first. Cedarclaw was seeking an apprentice.
-- "Before I give these three apprentices mentors, I will also call upon Cedarclaw. Please come forward," Fernstar called to the medicine cat. It wasn't exactly required for a medicine cat to have an apprentice at all times, but it was still a good idea. Cedarclaw herself often looked overworked to Maplefeather, always having to send messages herself when she could be stocking up with cobwebs or something. An apprentice's job was both to learn and take care of the smaller duties, which saved everyone time and frustration. "Patrols and training sessions will commence next dawn after a Medicine cat apprentice has been named," Fernstar added on, reminding Maplefeather of her new duties. The long-haired she-cat flicked her ears back in slight apprehensiveness. What binded these cats to listen to her? The only thing keeping them from treating her the exact same way they did apprentices, or kits, was a title and her own tendency to look after herself. Maplefeather shook these thoughts from her mind and paid attention to the rituals.
-- Any one of these young cats could become the next medicine cat. Thistlepaw, who was easily impressed, would probably not be the one selected. Maplefeather could easily see how excited she was. While every apprentice is expected to be inquisitive and humble, medicine cats took a different kind of ambition. Maplefeather didn't even consider Icepaw - he was prickly and unsympathetic, even compared to herself. Hawkpaw, while quiet, certainly seemed dedicated and determined to do his best. He seemed the best selection out of all of them, but who knew what Cedarclaw was thinking? Perhaps it would be Redkit, or Bluekit. Both of them were young, but it had not been unheard of for kits to become medicine cat apprentice. The former was always so quiet and considerate, keeping his pelt clean and proper - not unlike Maplefeather, herself - next to his sister, who was always jumping around and getting int he way. Both of them were interesting in their own way.
-- "I will be taking Icepaw to the Moonpool when the chance is given, so that he shall receive the status of the next ThunderClan medicine cat apprentice. Icepaw, do you accept what I say, are you willing to become the next medicine cat of ThunderClan?" Maplefeather's eyes widened for a moment, before she remembered the whole Clan could see her reactions and relaxed. Instead, she turned her gaze to Icepaw to see his reaction. At first, his eyes widened and his jaw dropped, but Maplefeather noticed his claws sinking into the mud. Was he imagining the mud as some poor cat's throat? His eyes narrowed as his mind went through the information being flung at it, but not in anger. Cold comprehension spread across his face, filling Maplefeather with a contained suspicion of the new apprentice. "I accept your offer, it is an h.....it'll be interesting to serve my clan in this way."
-- The deputy shook her head impatiently. She was just imagining these dangerous emotions in Icepaw's eyes - he was just like any other apprentice, and he'd make an...interesting medicine cat. Fernstar continued, with seemingly no worry in her voice. "So it is final. Cedarclaw and Icepaw will travel to the Moonpool after the sun sets tomorrow."
-- "Now as four young cats sit in front of me I would like to call upon Bramblestep. Ah, the apprentices. Maplefeather's mouth twitched up into a slight grin at the young warrior's surprise - why did she think "young warrior"? He was older than her. As if Fernstar hadn't noticed his surprise, she went on. "Bramblestep, you will mentor Bluekit. Your loyalty and care have made you a respected in ThunderClan, may you pass on your knowledge to Bluepaw." There was no doubt he would, as the tabby tom padded over to the newly named apprentice, touching noses with her.
-- "Ravencaw, you will mentor Hawkpaw. Although you are young, your mind and honesty has proven to make you quite an interesting cat. I hope you pass on everything you have learned to Hawkpaw." Maplefeather watched with equal respect as Ravencaw and Hawkpaw touched noses. She still thought that Hawkpaw would have made a better medicine cat apprentice, but there was no helping that now, especially as he now had a warrior mentor.
-- "Maplefeather, as the deputy of ThunderClan you are not exempt from the chance of getting an apprentice. You will be mentoring Redkit. Your wit and commitment has been valued, I hope you will pass on everything that you have learned and experienced to Redpaw." Maplefeather nodded to herself and padded over to Redpaw, smiling at Bramblestep nearby with his own apprentice. She touched her nose to Redpaw's, her eyes sparkling with the same kind of excitement as a new apprentice's - but now, she was on the other side. It seemed odd to think of herself as a mentor, but many things had happened tonight. She sat beside Redpaw, listening to the rest of the ceremony.
-- "Goldenheart, you will be mentoring Thistlepaw. Your concentration and good nature has always brought smiles to our faces. May you pass on your knowledge to Thistlepaw." Maplefeather grinned as she thought of the two cats' personalities. Goldenheart and Thistlepaw would make for a good match. The Clan began chanting all four apprentices' names as the two touched noses, but somehow left out Icepaw. "Bluepaw! Redpaw! Thistlepaw! Hawkpaw!" Maplefeather changed his name in her mind, hoping it would count for a little of the respect he deserved.
-- Now that the ceremonies were over, Fernstar skidded down the Highledge, and the rest of the Clan were looking at Maplefeather expectantly. Patrols. Ew. Ah well, she should at least get them over with.
-- The four new mentors would need to take their apprentices out, but there needed to be border patrols and hunting patrols. "Bramblestep and Bluepaw, you two will patrol the WindClan border. Make sure Bluepaw knows where the scent marks should go," she started, her voice at first tentative, but then more assertive as she gained respectful glances from her Clanmates. "Ravencaw, Hawkpaw, you two can train. Goldenheart, Thistlepaw, you two can patrol the ShadowClan border - find a cat to come with you if you want. Kestrelclaw, you should stay here to guard the camp. Redpaw and I will go train as well." Maplefeather thought for a moment, calculating how many cats they had. "Everyone should catch some prey if they can, and bring back some for the Clan." the deputy tried to make it seem as though she'd been giving orders like this for moons, although she really hadn't.

"Bramblestep, you will mentor Bluekit. Your loyalty and care have made you respected in Thunderclan, may you pass on your knowledge to Bluepaw." Fernstar announced. Bluepaw squealed in delight, then quickly shut her mouth. Oops! She thought, and noticed her brother rolling his eyes. She went over and touched noses with Bramblestep, eyes shining, and her body wiggling in barely contained excitement. Cool, Bramblestep's my mentor! I hope he likes me! I can't wait to start training! I'm an apprentice now! I'm Bluepaw! Bluepaw Bluepaw! Bluepaw's thoughts were a quick whirl of sentences, and her outward appearance was a young, blue-gray she-cat with a huge smile pasted on her face.
Redkit smiled as his sister was named an apprentice. He would be named soon as well. He wondered who his mentor would be. "Maplefeather, as the deputy of ThunderClan you are not exempt from the chance of getting an apprentice. You will be mentoring Redkit. Your wit and commitment has been valued, I hope you will pass on everything that you have learned and experienced to Redpaw." The newly named Redpaw's eyes widened. Maplefeather...the deputy is my mentor! He thought, padding calmly forward to touch noses with her. Maplefeather. I can learn a lot from her, so that someday I can be a good deputy, than leader of the clan. Redpaw became lost in ambitious thoughts, then looked up with a start as Maplefeather began giving out orders. Fernstar must have finished speaking.
His gaze studied his mentor calmly. How professionally she gave out the orders. Even though she had just been named, she looked like she'd been doing it forever. His ears perked up as she said that they would start training. Yes! I get to learn how to be a warrior starting now! It's too bad Bluepaw can't train with me... Redpaw's smile faded, but then he reminded himself that they wouldn't always be together now. He glanced up at Maplefeather. "When do we start?" He asked seriously.
"Bramblestep and Bluepaw, you two will patrol the WindClan border. Make sure Bluepaw knows where the scent marks should go." Maplefeather ordered. Bluepaw practically jumped for joy. Her face had such a happy expression on it. "I get to patrol the border, I get to patrol the border!" She froze, then felt heat flood her face as she realized she'd just said that out loud. "Oops." She whispered, her ears flattening in shame. They quickly stood back up again, though. "Bramblestep, Bramblestep! Let's go! I want to go see the border! Isn't this awesome? I can't wait!" She beamed up at him, just happy to be an apprentice.

[ THISTLE ]
Thistlepaw's yowls were the last to end, the last to be ripped away by the wind. Her claws escaped into the soil, kneading the damp earth in anxiety. Surely, if the deputy had just been named, then apprentices were next? Thistlepaw squinted up at Fernstar expectantly. The next words would absolutely be her name and... who were the other apprentices? The only muzzle that popped into her mind was of a frowning Icepaw. The splotched-tabby twisted her broad shoulders to look over the clearing, trying to pick out any small forms. She could see the squirming siblings, Bluekit and Redkit, even in the low light and muscular forms taking out chunks of the kits from her vision.
Perhaps Thistlepaw would have found Hawkpaw in the crowd, but any bother for the tom was wiped away as Fernstar began to speak and a single cat climb the Highledge. Thistlepaw examined the ascending clanmate...Cedarclaw?
The young cat's heart faltered a bit, but it was quickly swamped over by impatience. "Well, duh Thistlepaw. Of course the medicine cat apprentice is more...special then a regular ol' cat like you." She sighed mentally, and went back to scanning the crowd. Besides, Cedarclaw was refusing to speak, head bowed. She only had five options, but Thistlepaw guessed it must have been pretty darn important if Cedarclaw was taking her time like this. At least big cats couldn't be apprentices, that made the process shorter. The she-cat tried to imagine a full-grown cat taking orders from a mentor. An inescapable giggle burst from her muzzle.
...Just at the moment Icepaw accepted Cedarclaw's apprenticeship offer. Not like Thistlepaw noticed, or anything of the sort. No, she called his name out once or twice as if her insulting accident had never happened. "Well, he never wants to talk'ta anyone," She mused. "And he is a grumpy badger. Every other medicine cat besides Cedarclaw is like that, right?"
Then a realization hit her, hard enough that any thought of the silver tabby tom was knocked straight out of her head. Apprentice...apprentices! She and all the other cats were up next! Thistlepaw hastily licked her fur down once again, smoothing down her fur a final time a picking out a few of her "forest souvenirs". By the time Fernstar had requested Bramblestep, she was sitting proudly beneath the shadow of the ragged cliff which shielding the ThunderClan camp. Bluepaw, Hawkpaw, and Redpaw were all called up alongside Bramblestep, Ravencaw, and-- the deputy!-- Maplefeather.
"That lucky furball, Redpaw!" The she-cat thought, but a grin was on her muzzle. He really was lucky, and jealousy barely brushed her fur before being pulled off by the wind and replaced by Fernstar's yowl. "Goldenheart, you will be mentoring Thistlepaw."
Thistlepaw ears pricked. Goldenheart was a warrior she barely know...well, that would change! She would be the best apprentice to the best mentor ever from the best Clan ever! The apprentice puffed her chest out, attempting to appear formidable and strong for her mentor, when she arrived. As she waited she heard Maplefeather run around giving this order and that. Thistlepaw was just able to pick out her name, and her assignment: patrolling the ShadowClan border! The she-cat wriggled in her place. This day was only growing better and better, and all she needed was a simple rub of noses from Goldenheart to begin it all...

Bramblestep
Bramblestep just barely concealed a flinch as Bluepaw squealed kin delight, all but running up to meet him. Warily, he sat down beside the young she-cat, doing his best to look just as excited as his fellow newly named mentors. His eyes, however, two pale orbs in the steadily decreasing moonlight, gave away the half-panicked, half-worried thoughts that raced through his mind. What was he supposed to do now, as a mentor? His gaze slid to where Maplefeather sat, hoping for some kind of clue as to what his next move should be. She was the deputy, after all; surely she would know? But she simply sat next to Redpaw, her head inclined upward and her pale blue gaze still trained on the High Ledge. Bramblestep followed her gaze and blinked, suddenly feeling unbelievably stupid. The ceremony was still going on.
"Bluepaw! Redpaw! Thistlepaw! Hawkpaw!" Bramblestep hastily joined in the chanting, with perhaps a bit more enthusiasm than necessary in his guilt for letting his mind drift off like that. He may not have been the capable, wise figure that one-or rather, he-expected a mentor to be, but the least he could do was pay attention to such an important ceremony.
Too soon, however, the chorus of yowls died down, leaving the tabby warrior with no more excuses. Time to make a gameplan. They could...they could...explore the territory. That seemed like a logical thing to do. That would take at least half the day, wouldn't it? And then on the way back, maybe they could do some hunting. But then, that would involve him teaching Bluepaw how to hunt. Brambestep's stomach twisted at the very thought. Perhaps he would leave the whole "teaching" thing for another day...preferably one where he didn't feel like he was about to vomit.
In the end, it was Maplefeather who saved him from making the decision. "Bramblestep and Bluepaw, you two will patrol the WindClan border. Make sure Bluepaw knows where the scent marks should go," she directed, her blue gaze resting on the two cats-warrior and apprentice-for a moment before continuing to the others. Bramblestep exhaled in slight relief, shooting a grateful glance at the back of the deputy's pale golden head. Patrolling. That was easy. Safe.
He opened his jaws to convey this information to Bluepaw, but the hyper, blue-grey she-cat beat him to it. "Bramblestep, Bramblestep! Let's go! I want to go see the border! Isn't this awesome? I can't wait!" She spoke in a rush, apparently having no time for any sort of pause between words. Her small paws kneaded the soft earth, her gaze bright with anticipation. Her excitement didn't help with Bramblestep's no-vomit strategy.
"Er..." he began, blinking warily at his young apprentice. His unsure voice sounded lame even to him, and he felt his pelt prickle with embarrassment. The fact that the new deputy of the entire clan was sitting not a fox-length away from him didn't help with this. Bramblestep swallowed, and forced a few more words out. "Did you...ah...want to eat first?"

"Did you...ah...want to eat first?" Bramblestep nervously asked Bluepaw. The young she-cat, however, was completely oblivious to her mentor's lack of confidence. "Nah, I'm good! I just want to go! Unless you want to eat, then I'll eat too! Are you hungry, I can go grab you a mouse! Or maybe I can catch you something, because I'm going to be a great hunter someday! I want to leave now, though, but I'll wait if you want to eat, but if you don't, let's go!" She gasped for breath. She had to stop talking so much, but she was so excited, she just couldn't help it. She beamed up at Bramblestep, happy to have him as her mentor.
Redpaw almost sneered at Bramblestep's faltering tone. He's weak! I'm so glad I got a strong warrior as my mentor. He thought, glancing up at Maplefeather. Looking back at his sister, he almost snorted in disbelief. She didn't notice a thing! The crazy furball was spouting out a sentence per second, not even once noticing the state of her mentor. Bluepaw... He sighed. At least she's not pathetic, like Bramblestep is.
{{By the way, that's just Redpaw, who's really rude, not me. I never intended for Redpaw to be a likeable character.}}
